EP Review: Takeover by Amiri

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Looking for something new to throw on at a function? Perhaps a fresh study jam sesh? Consider Takeover by Amiri. From its sensual, airy guitar-plucked intro Hindsight to its invigorating, driving finale Take one, the EP impressively spans several genres and tackles prolific, relatable subject matter. Despite the EPs brevity (6 songs) it manages to harbor both a modern hip-hop feel whilst nuancing 2010’s effervescent trap-rap feel. The themes Takeover include general rap subject matter; the trials and tribulations of relationships with women, to the desire of self-expression as an artist resulting in financial success. Although this EP may appear as a generic rap project, upon closer inspection it is expertly written and sounds skillfully produced. All of the featured artists are incorporated strategically; highlighting their unique styles while in tandem sonically complimenting the EPs cadence as well as Amiri's vocal style . The clever lyricism is my favorite of Takeover's many quirks and twists. Road Rage exemplifies this with its lyrics that personify car culture under the lens of dealing with an agonizing love affair. Meant It also utilizes poetic bars. “I’m really using my words like weapons and we out here giving ‘em bullets like blessings” and “chaotic, iconic, honestly, psychotic. People only like your music cause I’m on it” are my favorites.

For an artist with less than 500 Spotify listeners, Amiri packs a striking punch with his apparent sleek style and confident presentation. Takeover marks the start of a promising musical career and left me excited for what's to come. -Natalie B
